Word Meanings: Layout Exploration

Type & Image, Fall 2021

This Type & Image project involved creating a sixteen-page booklet based on various interpretations of a given word. From statistics and history to pop culture and weather, the various contents of each page allowed for a multitude of ways to combine typography and imagery and create dynamic compositions. Restrictions for this project included a limitation of one serif and one sans-serif typeface and a maximum of three different colors.

Booklet Creation

Creative Exploration

Before starting to prototype the booklet, I took part in various types of preliminary creative exploration with various assignments all centered around a given word of “umbrella.” Whether it was thumbnail sketches of icons, mood boards, or mock album covers for fictional bands, these explorations allowed for me to prototype different styles and compositions that could be included in the booklet.

Rough Drafts

After creative exploration, I then created several rough drafts to showcase potential compositions and subjects for the spreads inside the booklet.

Final Booklet

Following a round of peer review and an Exquisite Corpse exercise to trade ideas and styles for spreads, I refined the previous compositions, added several new spreads, and edited each spread to support the three specific color swatches I chose. The final booklet can be browsed digitally here.
